Travelling to the Lhasa region of Tibet, I was not prepared for the wonders that I would find there. The first thing I noticed when I arrived was the brightness and coolness of the areas. It took me awhile to get adjusted to the high altitude. After I had adjusted, however, I was off to tour the area. I started with the Potala Palace. The architecture of the buildings was spectacular. The gentle sloping of the stairways to access it was a blessing for me. I was not out of breath by the time I reached the summit. It was very interesting to see the White Palace. The striking white and yellow against the clear blue sky was a thing of beauty. I was also awed by the Red Palace. While taking the tour, I envisioned myself getting lost to see if I could find my way out. I could not because of the labyrinthian hallways. The design was meant to confuse and confound, and I was both after the tour.
Our next stop was the Jokhang Temple. The thing that caught my eye about this place was the two golden deer flanking the Dharma wheel on the rooftop, which seemed to be made from gold. It was hard to believe that this temple had been ravaged several times before. The people who restored it saved a precious piece of history that I hope to one day return and study.
Of course I could not travel between these areas without going through Barkhor Street. The area reminded me of markets that I had to shop in as a child. There were a lot of beads and trinkets that I wanted to buy. I love to collect souvenirs from my trips and thought that a mini statute would be perfect. Even though I am not Buddhist, I had to take the pilgrimage walk around Jokhang. I ended up straying back towards the Palace. The beautiful ponds and picturesque scenes provided plenty of photographic memories for me.
The next day I visited the DrepungMonastery. I had heard that it once housed around 10000 monks at its peak. It was partially destroyed in 1951, but repairs have been made. The most interesting thing about this place was the 1000 Buddhas. I was taken aback by the sheer number of them and they all looked identical. I cannot imagine the amount of dedication it took to make all those statues the exact same way. I do, however, respect the time and dedication it took to make them. After the Monastery I went to Norbulinka. The buildings did not impress me as much as the Palace did, but the gardens were majestic. Roses, petunias, hollyhocks, marigolds, and chrysanthemums were arranged in such a style that made you not want to leave. It felt like the most serene place on earth. I wanted to stay but knew that I had to leave the next day. I hope that someday I can revisit this area of Tibet and have Pan-Tibet Travel agency plan my travel again. They were very efficient with the way the days were planned out!
